Bar Stools for Islands and Breakfast Bars

A kitchen island isn't complete without good seating. Bar stools turn it into a spot for breakfast, homework and chats while you cook. The key is getting height, spacing and comfort right.

Choose the Right Height

Measure from the floor to the underside of your worktop. Then subtract 25 to 30cm. That's your ideal seat height. Standard kitchen worktops are about 90cm high. They suit stools with a seat height of 60 to 65cm. Bar-height counters, around 105cm, need taller stools.

How Many Stools Will Fit?

Allow about 60cm per stool, measured centre to centre. Swivel stools and stools with arms need a little more. A 180cm island usually fits three stools.

• Footrests – take pressure off your legs.
• Swivel seats – make getting on and off easier.
• Padded seats – add comfort for family meals.

Fabrics and Finishes

Brushed velvet looks rich and soft. Boucle feels cosy and adds texture. Leather effect wipes clean, which helps in busy kitchens. Metal legs give a modern feel. Wooden legs warm up a traditional kitchen.

Styling Tips

Match the stool colour to your cabinet handles or lights. Or pick one bold colour against a neutral kitchen. Keep stools tucked under the overhang when not in use. This keeps walkways clear.
